Media in Our Community
The session began with a brief discussion with Jackie Doak, Director of Dart, and a tour of the Compass Centre on Shedden Road. before relocating to the Dart offices in Camana Bay for dinner, followed by the seminar, with a fun-and-informative debrief at LOCO, Camana Bay.
The seminar’s objectives were for the class to discuss the impact of media in the Cayman Islands and the role social media plays in society, learning from players in the current social media and traditional media landscape in Cayman. Speakers included Lynn Byles, Managing Director of Tower Marketing who spoke on market research/media consumption. Wendy Ledger, who is one of the founders of Cayman News Service and has been a journalist for more than two decades. And Sandra Hill who is Founder & Manager of Cayman Marl Road.
The 25 students divided up into three small groups and got an in-depth discussion about the key issues and challenges in today’s media and its impact on our community. Each speaker had the opportunity to visit all three groups and answer a variety of questions surrounding the topics at hand. Some of the topics discussed were how choice of media platforms continually changes, as new technologies become available. The lively discussions during the evening also brought into relief the changing nature of media and news.
